Medical Program Teach Out and Transitional Arrangements

What are the teach out arrangements for the current MD program?

The new MD program will commence in 2023. Most students enrolled in the current MD program will progress without delay and will graduate on time. It is acknowledged, however, that some students may be delayed in their studies due to exceptional circumstances, enrolment in a research higher degree, or because they are unable to progress due to unsatisfactory academic performance. We are committed to supporting students to complete either the current MD program, or to transition to the new MD program, if appropriate.

There will be two years of progressive teach out for each year of the current MD program as outlined below:

I am enrolled in Year 1 of the current MD program in 2022, what are the teach out arrangements?

The below scenarios are available to eligible students and will be subject to the application of UQ policies and procedures. For example, students can be awarded up to #4 units of supplementary assessment per semester.

Semester 1	If you are a non-repeating student and fail any Year 1, Semester 1 course after supplementary assessment (if applicable) (Non-repeating student)	Unable to progress to Semester 2, 2022 Offered to transfer to the new MD program in Semester 1, 2023. This would involve an interruption of studies for Semester 2, 2022. Partial credit into the new year-long Year 1 course is not possible.
Semester 1	If you are a repeating student and fail any Year 1, Semester 1 course after supplementary assessment (if applicable) (Repeating student)	If you do not pass you will receive communication regarding a Progression Intervention, detailed in the relevant Program Rules (UQ-Onshore, UQ-Ochsner).
Semester 2	If you are a non-repeating student and fail Clinical Science 2 in Semester 2 after supplementary assessment (if applicable) (Non-repeating student)	You will be required to take an interruption of studies in Semester 1, 2023 You will repeat Clinical Science 2 in Semester 2, 2023 as part of the teach out cohort. If Year 1 requirements are met in 2023, you will transfer to Year 2 of the new MD program in Semester 1, 2024. You will receive additional support to assist with the transition and this may include the requirement to complete compensatory learning experiences.
Semester 2	If you are a repeating student and fail Clinical Science 2 in Semester 2 after supplementary assessment (if applicable) (Repeating student)	If you do not pass you will receive communication regarding a Progression Intervention, detailed in the relevant Program Rules (UQ-Onshore, UQ-Ochsner).
Semester 2	If you are a non-repeating student and fail the following courses: Clinical Practice 2 HSR 2 EPP 2 (Non-repeating student)	You will repeat the course(s) in intensive mode in the Summer Semester, 2022. If you pass your Summer Semester 2022 enrolment you will progress to Year 2 of the current MD program in Semester 1, 2023. If you do not pass your Summer Semester 2022 enrolment you will receive communication regarding a Progression Intervention, detailed in the relevant Program Rules (UQ-Onshore, UQ-Ochsner).
	If you are a repeating student and fail the following courses: Clinical Practice 2 HSR 2 EPP 2 (Repeating student)	If you do not pass you will receive communication regarding a Progression Intervention, detailed in the relevant Program Rules (UQ-Onshore, UQ-Ochsner).

I would like to undertake a research higher degree after I complete Year 2, what will happen when I return?

Returning students will commence the year of the program that is offered at the time of return; students will not return to a teach out cohort. When students return to the new program (from 2025), they will receive additional support to assist with the transition and this may include the requirement to complete compensatory learning experiences.

I heard the new program is significantly different from the current program. What preparation would students who transfer to the new curriculum need?

We will work with you to develop a detailed transition plan to ensure you are ready for a successful transition to the new program. This will include compensatory learning experiences and tailored academic guidance related to the expected learning outcomes of the new program. This may include additional tuition related to the vertical themes of the new curriculum and additional clinical experience.

Can I choose to transfer into the new MD program?

I currently receive support via the US Financial Aid scheme. How would this be affected if I transferred to the new medical program?

We are required by US Federal Law to define and enforce standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress. These standards include students adhering to immigration/visa legislation, maintaining enrolment, progression and good academic standing as well as completing the program within a maximum timeframe. If you are unable to maintain progress via teach out offerings, and are eligible to transfer to the new program, you will need to ensure that you are able to complete your studies within the maximum permissible timeframe. Will I be impacted by the Job-ready Graduate Package?

If you commenced the program in 2022, the Job-ready Graduate Package will apply. It is important to note the following useful information:

The Job-ready Graduate Package came into effect in 2022 and is applicable to all domestic students who commenced a program in 2022 with a Commonwealth supported place (HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP). Under the package, eligible students can access a total of seven years study (Student Learning Entitlement) via a Commonwealth supported place. The new package prevents students from incurring fees, and potentially debt, for programs where there is unsatisfactory performance. Progress is measured by maintaining a satisfactory completion rate, otherwise students receive a ‘low completion rate’ status and lose their access to a Commonwealth supported place. Students should contact Student Administration if they have specific concerns about their entitlement or status.

I am an international student. How would a transfer to the new medical program affect me?

All international students must have a valid visa to study in Australia. While visas differ, they generally require students to maintain enrolment in a CRICOS-registered program, plus satisfactory attendance and progress to complete within a set timeframe, as well as other non-program related requirements. Most current medical program students are expected to remain in their current medical program. If you were unable to maintain progress via teach out offerings, and were eligible to transfer to the new program, you would need to ensure that you able to extend your eligibility to remain in Australia to study. You would need to carefully consider your visa implications and costs of transferring. Individual visa queries can be forwarded to Student Administration. Individual fees queries should be submitted to Student Fees.

What qualifications could I receive if I leave the medical program early?

Who can provide advice about the options available to me?

If you fail Year 1 courses in Semester 1, 2022 after supplementary assessment (if applicable), you will be required to meet with the MD Program Convenor to discuss recommencing the new MD program in Semester 1, 2023.
