Ochsner Clinical Immersions

Clinical Immersion Order

UQ-Ochsner Year 4 Allocation Information Presentation -TBA

5.1 Year 4 UQ-Ochsner MD students must complete their General Practice and Critical Care Plus Clinical Immersions at the OCS.

5.2 Year 4 UQ-Ochsner MD students will complete the five Clinical Immersion Terms in one of the following orders:

5.3 Year 4 UQ-Ochsner MD Students will have the opportunity to preference the clinical immersion term order (i.e. Group 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5).

Clinical Extension

5.4 In accordance with AMC requirements and other constraints on placements (as per Section 5.1), Year 4 UQ-Ochsner MD students are required to complete their Return Placement during the eight (8) week Clinical Extension term in Australia.

5.5 Students will have the opportunity to rank their preferred pathway. The available pathways for selection are listed in the table below. Refer to the list of Learning Communities in Section 2.

5.6 Accommodation and travel subsidies will be provided to all students who undertake the Clinical Extension term in a Regional, Rural and Remote location.

Critical Care Plus

5.7 Students will undertake an eight (8) week Critical Care Plus term, at the OCS (as per as per Section 5.1), comprised of a 4-week Emergency immersion, a 2-week Anaesthetic immersion, a 1-week Intensive Care immersion and a 1-week Ophthalmology immersion.

General Practice

5.8 Students will undertake an eight (8) week immersion in General Practice at the OCS (as per Section 5.1).

Elective (Personal Learning and Development)

5.9 Students are required to undertake the eight (8) week Elective immersion during Year 4 of their program.

5.10 The Elective immersion must be undertaken within the allocated elective term.

5.11 UQ-Ochsner MD Students must complete the Elective immersion in two 4-week blocks.

5.12 Students are permitted to undertake their entire Elective immersion at Ochsner, but it must be in two different specialties.

5.13 The Elective immersion may be split between an external site and Ochsner.

5.14 UQ-Ochsner MD Students are permitted to undertake their Elective immersion in one specialty, only if it is at two different institutions.

5.15 Students may undertake a 4-week Elective immersion at Ochsner or an external provider with the remaining four weeks in research.

5.16 Students are not permitted to contact clinicians at Ochsner directly regarding Elective opportunities.

5.17 Students undertaking a Research Higher Degree at UQ are not permitted to use their current research project and/or thesis write-up for their Elective immersion.

Pre-Internship (PRINT)

5.18 All students, provided they have successfully met the MEDI7400 requirements to date, will undertake a Pre-Internship (PRINT) immersion in Term 5.

5.19 The PRINT includes a clinical immersion that is eight (8) weeks in duration.

5.20 UQ-Ochsner MD Students must complete the PRINT immersion in two 4-week blocks.

5.21 Students are permitted to undertake their entire PRINT immersion at Ochsner, but it must be in two different specialties.

5.22 The PRINT immersion may be split between an external site and Ochsner.

5.23 UQ-Ochsner MD Students are permitted to undertake their PRINT immersion in one specialty, only if it is at two different institutions.

5.24 Students are not permitted to contact clinicians at Ochsner directly regarding immersion opportunities.
