UQ-Ochsner Orientation and Onboarding
This section contains complete details for UQ-Ochsner students transitioning to Year 3 at the UQ-Ochsner Health Campus.
NOTE: Students may experience difficulties accessing some of the websites needed to complete orientation and onboarding requirements, while still in Australia or outside the U.S. For many complex reasons, some sites are not always accessible everywhere in Australia. The sites are accessible on campus at St. Lucia and Herston, and anywhere in the CBD of Brisbane. Please also try using different internet browsers.
6. BLS Certification
You are strongly encouraged to have this certification completed before arriving in New Orleans.
Ochsner Health requires students to have a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR eCard. This involves a 2-part process.
- HeartCode BLS online course
- After completion of the Heartcode BLS Online course, Instructor-led skills testing is required to obtain the BLS Provider eCard upon successful completion of the skills testing.
There are 2 ways to purchase the Heartcode BLS Online Course:
- Ochsner Community Training Center (CTC) - New Orleans ACLS, BLS and CPR Classes | Ochsner Health System (enrollware.com). This fee of USD$75.00 includes the online course, Instructor-led skills testing and the BLS Provider eCard. The Instructor-led skills testing is held at Ochsner Elmwood campus ONLY and the address is as follows: 1201 South Clearview Pkwy, Building B, 3rd Floor, New Orleans, LA 70121. Once you have completed your online course, you must print the Heartcode BLS Completion Certificate to bring with you to your scheduled Instructor-led skills testing appointment.
- American Heart Association - HeartCode® BLS | AHA. This fee of USD$36.00 is the online course ONLY. This does not cover the Instructor-led skills testing or the BLS Provider eCard.
You may locate an AHA Instructor in Australia or your hometown for a possible additional fee (determined by the AHA Instructor in Australia or your hometown) to complete Part 2 skills testing, before you arrive at Ochsner. You can locate an AHA Certified Training Center in Australia or in the U.S. via the American Heart Association website, Course Catalog Search | American Heart Association CPR & First Aid. NOTE: Ochsner Health accepts only the American Heart Association Certification eCards. American Red Cross is NOT accepted.
You will need to secure your AHA BLS Provider eCard before your orientation start date. Please upload documentation that you are BLS certified (after the Instructor-led skills session) via Placements by Friday, 10 January 2025. Once logged into Placements, navigate to My Details > MED-Ochsner Important Information > BLS Certification and upload your documentation.
If you do not get Part 2 skills testing completed prior to arriving in New Orleans and if you have purchased the Heartcode BLS Online Course through Ochsner CTC for USD$75.00, the Ochsner CTC will host Instructor-led skills testing stations on Thursday, 2 January, Friday, 3 January, and Monday, 6 January 2025, ONLY. Please note that participants are registered on a first-come, first-serve basis and can schedule their Instructor-led skills testing appointment after completion of the online course through our Calendly website - https://calendly.com/elmwoodctc/uq-med-students-bls-skills-testing. If you have purchased the Heartcode BLS online course ONLY through AHA for USD$36.00, Ochsner CTC does offer Instructor-led skills testing and the Provider eCard for USD$50.00, Ochsner CTC will contact you directly via email regarding payment after scheduling your Instructor-led skills testing appointment via the above Calendly website. For your convenience, you may email your Completion Certificate to ctc@ochsner.org after you have scheduled your skills testing appointment.
Please do not wait until the last minute as these sessions will fill up fast. You will not be allowed to miss any scheduled activities and MUST have this completed by Friday, 10 January 2025.
