UQ-Ochsner Orientation and Onboarding

This section contains complete details for UQ-Ochsner students transitioning to Year 3 at the Ochsner Clinical School.

NOTE: Students may experience difficulties accessing some of the websites needed to complete orientation and onboarding requirements, whilst still in Australia or outside the U.S. For many complex reasons, some sites are not always accessible everywhere in Australia. The sites are accessible on campus at St. Lucia and Herston, and anywhere in the CBD of Brisbane. Please also try using different internet browsers.

6. BLS Certification

You are strongly encouraged to have this certification completed before arriving in New Orleans.

Ochsner Health requires students to have a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR card. This involves a 2-part process.

  1. BLS Online eLearning Course or HeartCode BLS online eLearning Course
  2. Hands-On Skills Session

Purchase the BLS online course by one of the following methods:

Via the American Heart Association - www.onlineaha.org

  • If the course is purchased from the AHA, and you intend to complete the hands-on skills session at Ochsner, a USD$40 skills testing fee (made payable to the Ochsner CTC) will be required at the time of your scheduled appointment.

Via the Ochsner Community Training Center - www.ochsner.org/ctc

  • If the course is purchased from the Ochsner CTC, the fee you pay for the online course includes the skills testing fee if performed at Ochsner CTC.
    • Once on the Ochsner CTC site, click the button Purchase Community Courses Here.
    • Select BLS (CPR) HeartCode On Line Course & Skills Testing (for Healthcare Workers)

Once you have completed the online course, print your completion certificate. You must bring this certificate to be turned in to an AHA instructor to complete Part 2, the mandatory Hands-On Skills Session.

You may locate an AHA instructor in Australia or your hometown for a possible additional fee (determined by the AHA Instructor in Australia or your hometown) to complete Part 2, before you arrive at Ochsner. You can locate a certified training center in Australia or in the U.S. via the American Heart Association website, under “Find Hands-On Sessions - Locate A Skills Session.” NOTE: Ochsner accepts only the American Heart Association certification cards. American Red Cross is not accepted.

You will need to secure your AHA completion card before your orientation start datePlease upload documentation that you are BLS certified (after the hands-on skills session) via Placements by Monday, 8th January 2024. Once logged in to Placements, navigate to My Details > MED-Ochsner Important Information > BLS Certification and upload your documentation.

If you do not get Part 2 completed prior to arriving in New Orleans, the Ochsner Community Training Center will host skills testing stations on Wednesday, January 3rd, Thursday, January 4th and Friday, January 5th ONLY. Please note that participants are registered on a first-come-first-serve basis. Contact the Ochsner CTC at +1 504-842-6684 or CTC@ochsner.org to schedule a skills testing appointment. When scheduling the appointment, please be sure to provide a copy of your Heartcode BLS Completion Certificate from the online course or provide the certificate number located on the bottom left-hand side of the certificate.

Please do not wait until the last minute as these sessions will fill up fast. You will not be allowed to miss any scheduled activities and MUST get this completed before Introductory Week at Ochsner.
