The Medical School recognises that exceptional circumstances can lead to you requesting an internal transfer between Clinical Schools.

These guidelines will provide an overview of the application process and timeline for you to apply to transfer Clinical School.

 

4. Transfer to the Ochsner Clinical School

4.1 You are encouraged to meet with your Academic Guidance Lead to discuss your transfer request.

4.2  At the time of application, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident
  • Be enrolled in the MD program (program code 5740)
  • Be on track to successfully complete Year 2 of the program by Semester 2 in the year of application (total 32 units)
  • Be registered to engage in the United States Medical Licencing Examination (USMLE) Personalised Learning Stream of MEDI7200 (Year 2)
  • Be of Good Standing and have undertaken Years 1 and 2 without interruption. If an interruption of studies was taken, the documentation related to the interruption application will form part of the panels assessment; and
  • Be able to demonstrate exceptional circumstances that supports your request.

4.3 You must apply using the application form and provide supporting documentation; you may also be invited to participate in an interview.

4.4  Applications are assessed on an individual’s circumstances based on the information supplied and subject to availability of places.

  • Typically, transfers will only be supported if a reciprocal request has also been received and deemed eligible (i.e. an exchange between two students).

4.5  After applications are received and assessed, eligible applications will be considered by a panel comprising:

  • Dean, Medical School (or nominee)
  • Director, Ochsner Clinical School; and
  • Director, Greater Brisbane Clinical School; and/or
  • Director, Rural Clinical School.

4.6  The panel will provide a recommendation for a final decision which is at the discretion of the Faculty of Medicine Executive Dean.

4.7 Upon approval by the Executive Dean, the following requirements must be met prior to the transfer becoming unconditional and the program change officially processed by the University.

  • Successfully completed Years 1 and 2 of the Medical Program (#32 units).
  • Successfully completed the United States Medical Licencing Examination (USMLE) Personalised Learning Stream of MEDI7200 (Year 2).
  • Understand and formally acknowledge that the UQ-Ochsner MD program requires you to:
    • obtain a passing score in the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE) prior to undertaking Step 1 of the USMLE and the commencement of Year 3. Please note, a maximum of 4 attempts at the CBSE over two consecutive calendar years from the commencement of Year 2 is permitted.
    • attempt the USMLE Step 1 exam prior to census date Semester 1, Year 3, and be prepared to make arrangements to undertake the exam within this timeframe; and
    • pass the USMLE Step 1 exam prior to the commencement of Year 4.
    • return to Australia during Year 4 to complete a clinical immersion term.
  • Make a commitment to the transfer noting that reversion of the transfer will not be considered; and
  • Understand and formally acknowledge that the fee rates and program requirements will change.
