Elective (Personalised Learning Course)
Students are required to undertake the elective course during Year 4 of their program. The elective course includes a placement period that is six (6) weeks in duration. The elective placement can be undertaken at any approved location worldwide, including but not limited to Clinical Units of the Faculty. Applications for the elective placement activity must be made in accordance with the published guidelines and timeline. Further details can be found below.
Every institution has specific criterion that students must meet before undertaking a medical placement. Students must ensure that they can comply with all requirements before applying, as significant costs could occur. The Faculty of Medicine can assist in certain aspects of host institution requirements, but the responsibility remains with the student.

UQ Clinical Unit Placements
Eight weeks prior to each Elective block, students will have an opportunity to preference from the Elective placements offered by UQ Clinical Sites (preferencing dates can be found above under 'Application & Preferencing Dates' and also here under 'Key Dates'). Students can undertake an Elective placement at any UQ Clinical Unit, regardless of their clinical unit allocation. You can find the guide of the UQ Elective placement opportunities here (noting this is a guide only, with some placements not offered all blocks, and is subject to change due to operational requirements.).
Elective opportunities at UQ clinical sites must be taken in their entirety and cannot be split with a self-arranged placement.
Students are not permitted to contact clinicians at UQ Clinical Units directly regarding clinically based elective opportunities.
EOI for Specific Clinical Unit Placements
There may be an opportunity for students to undertake UQ Clinical Placements in the below fields, which are offered on an ad hoc basis. If students are interested in any of the below opportunities, they should email an Expression of Interest to med.placements@uq.edu.au, not less than 12 weeks prior to their Elective block start date. Students should include a copy of their CV and a brief statement outlining their interest in the field.
- Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (Burns) – Surgical
- Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (Radiation Oncology)
- The Prince Charles Hospital (Medical Education)
Applications will be forwarded to the clinical unit for consideration no earlier than 13 weeks prior but no later than 12 weeks to the Elective block. Students will be advised the outcome of their EOI in due course.
UQ General Practice (GP) Placements - Metro Location
The General Practice Clinical Unit (GPCU) have committed to sourcing elective placements in our Brisbane based General Practice community for students. Students (both GBCS and RCS) will be required to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a General Practice elective placement, no later than 12 weeks prior to the start of their Elective placement block (EOI deadlines for each block can be found here).
After submitting an EOI, the PCCU team will attempt to source a placement as close as possible to the residential address provided by you. Please note that by submitting and EOI, you are agreeing to:
- Attend the practice allocated to you
- Travel up to 1 hour each way to attend the practice allocated to you
- UQ providing a copy of your application and CV to the practice/s providing student placements
If PCCU are unable to find you a suitable placement, you will be advised prior to Elective preferencing opening for your allocated Block.
The EOI form can be found here and should be emailed directly to med.gpstudents@uq.edu.au

Rural & Remote Medicine Placements
A rural placement for your Year 4 Personalised Learning Course (PLC) is the perfect opportunity for domestic students to build on your Year 3 RRM experience and international students to have the rural experience that you missed out on.
Available rural sites for Semester 1 2024 PLC have been uploaded to InPlace so you should be able to view them when your block preferencing window opens, but if you wish to find out earlier what is available, please contact the RRM team.
in 2024, students who complete PLC at an RRM location will have access to RRM subsidies for travel and accommodation.
2024 rural sites for PLC will be finalised after RRM and GP placements have been allocated.
Please find rural placement opportunities on the flyer attached HERE. If students are interested in a rural placement, they should contact med.rrmstudents@uq.edu.au.
Self-Arranged Placements
Students are also able to undertake a self-arranged elective placement somewhere other than a UQ Clinical Site. Students will need to apply no later than 12 weeks prior to the commencement of their elective placement (application dates can be found above under 'Application & Preferencing Dates' and also here under 'Key Dates'). These timeframes are in place to allow the Faculty sufficient time to obtain the appropriate approvals (e.g. Student Placement Agreement (SPA), academic approval etc).
The elective is 6 weeks long, however, as some non-UQ clinical electives are fixed at 4 or 5 weeks, the elective can be split into two with approval from the Course Coordinator. Students will need to propose a learning activity to complete the remaining 1-2 weeks in their learning plan. It is important to note that all learning activities need to be supervised and students need to arrange their own supervisor. This can be the same person as for the other component of the Elective, or a different person. Reasonable examples might be 1-2 weeks spent writing up a case report or research project etc. These types of placements will be approved on a case-by-case basis.
It is important to note that self-arranged placements will still require the relevant approvals including a Student Placement Agreement (SPA). If a SPA is not signed by the placement provider by two weeks prior to the placement start date, the placement will not be approved and the student will be allocated to a placement with a UQ Clinical Unit. Students may wish to consider placement providers where the University has an existing relationship (overarching agreement). A list of these providers can be found here.
Please note that the MD program has set teaching periods. There is no flexibility when it comes to your placement block dates. Students will be required to start and finish their placements on the indicated dates:
Placement Block | Start of block | End of block |
1 | 15/01/2024 | 25/02/2024 |
2 | 26/02/2024 | 7/04/2024 |
3 | 15/04/2024 | 26/05/2024 |
4 | 24/06/2024 | 04/08/2024 |
5 | 5/08/2024 | 15/09/2024 |
6 | 23/09/2024 | 3/11/2024 |
Self-Arranged Placements - Locations
Agreements
It is important to note that self-arranged placements will still require the relevant approvals. Before a student commences a clinical placement outside of a UQ clinical site, an agreement must be in place.
- The Faculty of Medicine will arrange an agreement on behalf of students applying for an away placement, once the academic merits of the intended placement have been assessed.
- Please note that an application for an away placement will not be approved until a relevant agreement has been fully executed.
- Remember that getting an agreement signed can be a long process. Keep this in mind when you are organising your placements and managing the application processes through the placement provider and UQ.
If an agreement is not signed by the placement provider by two weeks prior to the placement start date, the placement will not be approved and the student will be allocated to a placement with a UQ Clinical Unit. Students may wish to consider placement providers where the University has an agreement in place, which can be found here.
