The UQ MD Learning Communities are clusters of health care providers including hospital and community-based services, general practices, and other community providers. Importantly, these Learning Communities comprise the students and staff based in the facilities and provide a platform where they can flourish in a mutually supportive environment, where relationships and connections are forged, and students nurtured.

Learning Communities provide a small cohort experience within large cohort experience, which supports improved connection and engagement. The longitudinal relationships inherent in the Learning Communities model are integral to effective teaching and learning, support progress toward attainment of the graduate attributes and promote excellence in clinical practice and scholarly endeavours.

2. Scope and purpose of the guidelines

2.1 These guidelines are applicable to Learning Community Allocations for and during the 2025 academic year only.

2.2 The Medical School has established the Learning Community allocation process to outline:

  • How GBCS students will be assigned to Learning Communities within the GBCS, and
  • The opportunities you have to change Learning Communities within your Clinical School.

2.3 If you wish to change Clinical Schools, you should refer to the Clinical School Transfer Guidelines.

2.4 The Dean of the Medical School is responsible for decisions related to Learning Community allocations. While all reasonable attempts are made to accommodate student requirements and preferences, this may not always be possible due to operational requirements and the admission pathway offer conditions.

2.5 Decisions related to Learning Community allocations are administrative in nature. In accordance with the University’s Student Grievance Resolution Policy, it is only possible to appeal in circumstances where a student can demonstrate that the decision did not comply with the University’s policies, procedures or rules. Personal dissatisfaction is not grounds for an appeal.

2.6 Further information about the allocation processes, and key dates, can be found here.
