How to undertake student self-guided research
- This page is exclusively for Year 1 and Year 2 MD students who wish to learn about and take advantage of self-guided research options during their medical degree.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL 2024 YEAR 1 STUDENTS: For all research in Year 1, please follow the activities outlined on the 2024 Year 1 Research Flowchart (PDF, 128.5 KB). The Flowchart highlights all Head Start Phase 1 and Head Start Phase 2 activities. Please stay within these activities for each Phase.
If you are interested in research during your MD degree, keep up with all the information on the Student Research Portal and watch for research news and announcements on Blackboard.
4. Register your research before you begin
It is mandatory for every student to register any research they undertake in the MD program.
- Register your research when you and your supervisor mutually agree on a project.
- This applies to any research (literature reviews to lab work) and any timeframe.
IMPORTANT: If you do not complete the Registration form, you will:
- Not be covered by UQ's insurance whilst undertaking research.
- Not be recognised or eligible for any awards for MD student research.
- Not receive an official letter of acknowledgment from the Medical Dean.
Please also remember to provide a copy of your completed registration form to your supervisor.
