How to undertake student self-guided research
- This page is exclusively for Year 1 and Year 2 MD students who wish to learn about and take advantage of self-guided research options during their medical degree.
- Please refer to the 2024 MD Research Streams Table PDF (PDF, 113.4 KB) for a brief outline of options to extend your research experience during your MD.
IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL 2024 YEAR 1 STUDENTS: For all research in Year 1, please follow the activities outlined on the 2024 Year 1 Research Flowchart (PDF, 128.5 KB). The Flowchart highlights all Head Start Phase 1 and Head Start Phase 2 activities. Please stay within these activities for each Phase.

3. Research project EOI reviewed
If you CHOSE a project from the list
When you and your supervisor have mutually agreed on a project, take this time to ask any final questions and clarify mutual expectations about your time commitments and outcomes.
- Important: Once you and your supervisor agree on expectations and outcomes, you must Register your research project – see Step 4.
If you SUGGESTED a project and supervisor
You will be contacted when the project has been reviewed.
- Approved – you and your supervisor will receive an email with approval notification and further details.
- Not approved – you and your supervisor will be contacted with suggestions on how to modify the project if necessary or suggest another.
