How to undertake student self-guided research
- This page is exclusively for Year 1 and Year 2 MD students who wish to learn about and take advantage of self-guided research options during their medical degree.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL 2024 YEAR 1 STUDENTS: For all research in Year 1, please follow the activities outlined on the 2024 Year 1 Research Flowchart (PDF, 128.5 KB). The Flowchart highlights all Head Start Phase 1 and Head Start Phase 2 activities. Please stay within these activities for each Phase.

1. Ensure you are progressing satisfactorily in all your MD coursework
Research is a vital component of your MD degree, but Extended Research options must fit within your MD requirements.
- Choose your research carefully and discuss your MD responsibilities with your research supervisor.
- Commit to what you can achieve.
- Choose projects that are flexible and not time critical.
- Wet lab and clinical research which involves strict timeframes is not encouraged.
