Clinical Immersion Guidelines
The Medical School has established the Clinical Immersion Allocation Process to manage and support the allocation of your clinical immersions throughout your program.
The Clinical Immersion Allocation Processes are designed to facilitate the equitable distribution of students to clinical immersions throughout the Academic Year and across all available Clinical Locations.
3. Year 3 Clinical Immersions
Clinical Immersion Order
3.1 GBCS students will complete the five clinical immersions terms in one of the following orders:

3.3 Students will have the opportunity to preference clinical immersion term order (i.e. Group 1-5).
3.4 Students who can demonstrate extenuating circumstances may be afforded special consideration during the allocation process (see section 5).
3.5 Clinical immersions will primarily be located within your Learning Community. Where clinical immersion experiences are not available in your Learning Community, they will be scheduled at a facility that offers the appropriate opportunities to meet the learning outcomes.
3.6 Following the publication of the provisional Year 3 clinical immersion term allocations, students will be able to submit a swap request for your group using the application form. This must be submitted during the designated swap period.
3.5 Swap requests are only related to your group and can only be considered within your Learning Community.
3.6 All applications for group swaps will be accommodated where possible, however are subject to operational requirements. The Medical School cannot guarantee fulfilment of swap requests.
Rural Clinical School
Mental Health Clinical Immersions
3.7 Students will complete Mental Health clinical immersions that will be integrated across the year. Students will spend time in a range of settings, including Inpatient Wards, Community Mental Health, Older Person’s Mental Health, Alcohol & Other Drugs, Consultation Liaison, and Child and Youth Mental Health.
Rural Clinical Immersion Term
3.8 Students will have the opportunity to preference your rural clinical immersion term location.
3.9 Students who can demonstrate extenuating circumstances may be afforded special consideration during the allocation process. This will be managed locally by the Rural Clinical School Rural and Remote Medicine Clinical Unit.
3.10 The preferencing timeline for your rural medicine clinical immersion will be communicated by the Rural Clinical School Rural and Remote Medicine Clinical Unit.
Wide Bay Learning Community Students
3.11 To support student learning and clinical capacity, 10 – 18 students can be accommodated at each clinical unit (Hervey Bay and Bundaberg).
3.12 Students will have the opportunity to apply for your primary location for Years 3 and 4 (Hervey Bay or Bundaberg Regional Clinical Units). This will include the opportunity for you to outline the basis for your request.
3.13 If you can demonstrate extenuating circumstances, you may be afforded special consideration during the allocation process. This will be managed locally by the Wide Bay Learning Community.
3.14 Students will be allocated to the Hervey Bay or Bundaberg Regional Clinical Units for Years 3 and 4.
3.15 If preferences for either clinical unit exceeds the operational range noted in paragraph 4.11, a request for volunteers will be made from the over-subscribed site.
3.16 If insufficient volunteers are identified, a panel will be convened to review the preferencing statements and supporting documentation. The panel will comprise:
- Director, Rural Clinical School
- Head, Bundaberg Regional Clinical Unit
- Head, Hervey Bay Regional Clinical Unit
3.17 The panel will provide a recommendation for a final decision which is at the discretion of the Dean, Medical School.
