Information for Onshore Domestic & International Students

The Ochsner Clinical School offers students the opportunity to experience a medical education from two world-class academic medical institutions: UQ Medicine and Ochsner Health in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Students who are not part of the UQ-Ochsner MD program (onshore domestic and international students) have the opportunity to apply for Year 4 placements at the Ochsner Clinical School. Placements are subject to availability. Please refer to Ochsner Clinical School Placements for details to apply.

    4. Compulsory immunisations

    Ochsner Health System policy requires all students scheduled for placements at the Ochsner Clinical School to have health checks and immunisations conducted at Ochsner Employee Health, 3530 Houma Boulevard, Metairie, Louisiana 70006. 

    Please note that this appointment with Ochsner Employee Health will be at no expense to you. Below are the steps you need to take.

    1. You will need to create a ReadySet account; instructions to do so are available via this link. After creating your account, complete the health surveys as indicated on ReadySet. NOTE: This portal cannot be accessed outside the United States.
    2. You may schedule your appointment through ReadySet; however, you must create your ReadySet account at least 24 hours before being able to schedule an appointment. 
    3. You MUST arrive in New Orleans by the Wednesday before your scheduled rotation. Your Ochsner Employee Health appointment must occur, and Ochsner Employee Health must approve results by 5:00 pm the Friday before your scheduled rotation. Students may begin on wards once they are cleared by Ochsner Employee Health.

    This appointment will include:

    • Mask Fitting
      • Make sure to bring a PHOTO ID.
      • NOTE: NO gum or anything sweet 15 minutes before your health screening. You may drink only water.
      • Men must have a clean-shaven face for mask-fitting.
    • Urine Drug Screen (Non-DOT 789 Panel) – The results must be negative for the following drugs: Amphetamines/methamphetamine, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepine, Cocaine, Creatinine, Extended Opiates, Hydrocodone, Marijuana, Methadone, Methylenedioxymethamphetamine – MDMA (Ecstasy), Phencyclidine, Propoxyphene.
      • NOTE: If a positive result is found for any of the above-listed drugs (or AUS equivalent), students must provide proof that this was prescribed legally by providing a copy of the prescription or other medical documentation by the prescribing physician. In addition, students who may be taking a prescribed drug that may impair or cause drowsiness should be prepared to submit similar documentation. 
    • TB testing (QuantiFERON Gold blood test)  
    • Flu Vaccine Students attending placements at Ochsner for Blocks 1, 2, and 6 (during the North American Winter, November - April) require up-to-date flu shots. Please be advised that the vaccine must be administered in the US due to different variations of the flu and vaccine.
