Emily is a University of Queensland medical student set to graduate in 2018 as a member of the inaugural UQ MD class. In January 2017 she was awarded a UQ research scholarship to complete a concurrent MPhil at the UQ Thoracic Research Centre, The Prince Charles Hospital. Emily’s research focuses on the emergency management of patients experiencing an exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) – a respiratory disease which causes considerable morbidity and mortality in Australia and worldwide. The research project involves a state-wide retrospective observational study of patients who presented to Queensland emergency departments in 2015 and 2016. De-identified patient data from the ambulance service, emergency departments and hospitals across Queensland will be linked and analysed to identify epidemiological trends and predictive factors for outcomes in this patient group. Ultimately the study will provide unique information that will potentially change practice and policy, resulting in improved healthcare outcomes for patients with COPD seeking emergency healthcare.
