The MD Program Rules require students to possess a valid current apply first aid certificate (including CPR for adults and children) prior to the commencement of the program. The CBL curriculum assumes knowledge gained in an apply first aid certificate therefore students must have this completed before commencing the program.

Please submit a current first aid certificate at the Year 1 orientation held in January. Students unable to produce evidence of completion of the certificate at the Year 1 orientation will be breaching the program rules and will have their enrolment cancelled.

The preferred certificates are apply first aid certificates (or equivalent) issued by members of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).  These certificates are awarded after attendance of a program with an end point examination. Membership of the Council provides guaranteed standards and uniformity of teaching. The main areas that should be covered are:

  • Apply the principles of first aid
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Asthma & Anaphylaxis management
  • Treatment of infection, shock, fractures, bleeding and burns
  • Emergencies due to lack of oxygen, excess heat or cold, heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy
  • Management of common medical emergencies
  • Treatment of poisoning including venomous bites and stings
