Mayne Academy of Medicine

About

The Mayne Academy is headed by Professor Darrell Crawford and encompasses teaching and research in all aspects of medicine. This includes the various internal body systems, such as haematology, cardiology, endocrinology, geriatric medicine, gastroenterology, renal medicine, clinical pharmacology, respiratory medicine, general medicine, rheumatology, neurology, and immunology. The Mayne Academy's academic staff members are involved in education, patient care, research, and community service.

All of the Mayne Academy's teaching staff are medical specialists and have concurrent Queensland Health appointments in hospitals, many as Directors of their specialty in the hospitals in which they work.

The Mayne Academy of Medicine offers a wide variety of research opportunities for staff and students, delivered in partnership with University Institutes and generally managed though our network of Clinical Schools. These opportunities range from development of novel teaching methods, through clinical trials and epidemiology, to health services research and basic laboratory science.  Students are actively encouraged to seek research advice from senior clinical or academic staff and to actively participate in research in Internal Medicine and its subspecialties.

The Mayne Academy of Medicine teaches Internal Medicine (i.e. Immunology, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Neurology, Endocrinology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Haematology, Clinical Pharmacology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology) to students undertaking the MD program. While Mayne Academy staff members are actively involved in all years of the 4-year MD Program, most of our teaching is to those students in Phase 2 of that program.

Placements

Clinical placements provide students with the opportunity to apply their studies as well as acquire further knowledge, skills and experience required to become a safe and competent medical practitioner.  Over the course of the medical program, students undertake a range of placements in a variety of healthcare settings.
