About Cunnamulla

Cunnamulla offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in a true outback experience. Locals reckon that in their town, the handshake’s stronger and the smile lasts longer. Perhaps that’s why Slim Dusty’s ‘Cunnamulla fella’ has become the epitome of bush folk and the bronze statue of him in the main street immortalises the larrikin in all Australians as he sits on his swag enjoying the moment. While wool growing and beef production are still the main industries, the new kids on the block are irrigated table grape farming, organic wheat and organic lamb production.

Close-by attractions include;

  • Activities on the Warrego River
  • Visit a working station
  • Currawinya National Park
  • Lake Bindegolly
  • Cunnamulla Fella Festival - August
  • Sand dune surfing
  • Camping at Charlotte Plains Station

Tips from Previous Students

  • Get involved with the community happenings early on - the gym is a great place to meet people (and it's free!) Most events aren't advertised properly but word of mouth is pretty reliable. Be prepared to travel up to 3 hours for an event but it's worth it for the experience! A big car isn't essential but if you're going bush bashing/off roaring/driving around paddocks you'll need a 4wd!!
  • Plenty of country race meets, Friday night bowls, tennis on Wednesdays and cricket on Fridays with the CACH mob, aerobics on Wednesdays and Monday, Sunday morning triathlon club, really just asking patients about local events!

Testimonials

The preceptor was an excellent supervisor! She was very keen to get me involved in Cunnamulla community and explore the local area - which translated to a far more enjoyable rural experience! The medical experience very true to life – my preceptor was keen for me to get as much experience as possible and would offer opportunities as they came up (as what happens in the outback!) She is very down to earth and - without really trying - made an excellent case for the lifestyle of a rural GP! Would absolutely recommend this placement to anyone who was looking for a proper taste of bush medicine!!

All my preceptors were very nice and got me involved. My main preceptor was exceptional. Very high level of knowledge, keen to teach and provide learning opportunities. She always made me feel welcome. Hospital and Primary health care clinic staff were very willing to help out and include me.

One of the best placements I’ve ever been on. The rural community was very hospitable and kind, and the preceptors were fantastic educators with many years of experience and stories.
