Tips from Previous Students

  • Get started on your rural health project early - slowly chip away at it consistently.
  • Ask collaborators for feedback on the direction of your rural health project.
  • Ask your preceptors and other clinicians to perform procedures - I personally took a no-shame approach in asking to participate - the worst thing a preceptor can do is say "No", but they also now know you are keen on learning. If they say "Yes" you've now got the opportunity to add to your knowledge-base/skill-set.
  • Actively seek out feedback and supervision from your preceptor, especially when they are happy to let you practice more independently - while I enjoyed independent learning/work and felt I was doing a good job as a medical student, I would have appreciated more feedback.
  • I would encourage students to engage more with the local RCS.

Testimonials

All of the GPs in the clinic were lovely, eager to teach and supportive throughout allowing me to participate in a number of activities and to see patients by myself before presenting my findings to them. Additionally, the nursing staff were so supportive and allowed me to participate/undertake a number of clinical skills.

Good for gaining more experience in general practice. Good exposure to allied health- physio and psychology in-house was nice. I also had the opportunity to see pharmacy and podiatry which was interesting too.

The practice engaged and cared about its patients and it was excellent to experience a good example of great medicine.

I thoroughly enjoyed theatre sessions with my preceptor - I was able to practice many IVC insertions under the supervision the anaesthesiologist. I also appreciated the doctors allowing me to practice my history taking and examination skills independently, before presenting cases to them.
