Tips from previous students
Placement:
- Be keen and proactive with your learning, ask for opportunities and never say no to giving something a go.
- While Beaudesert is close enough to the southern suburbs of Brisbane, it saves a tremendous amount of time to accept the homestay option rather than travelling everyday.
- Stay curious, and take interest in things outside of the textbook. Context is key, especially in rural medicine.
Community Engagement:
- Beaudesert Bakehouse - must go!
Testimonials
My experience has been amazing and I have learnt the most here than on any rotation. The preceptor is such a good teacher, involving me in every consult and procedure, letting me have a go at most things, giving me several opportunities to talk to patients myself and really challenging me in a safe environment.
My preceptor was extremely supportive of my learning throughout the entirety of this placement, and kept me constantly engaged with abundant learning opportunities. I am beyond thankful that he continually takes on students. I can only hope to develop into a clinician as half as great as he is.
Great placement experience. I already was interested in primary care but this placement definitely solidified my understanding of general practice in a regional setting and has given me enthusiasm to keep taking opportunities to work in regional/rural and remote primary care. The preceptor, nurses, registrar and other doctors all had input into my learning and I felt part of the community of healthcare workers, contributing to patients care. Brilliant!
