2020 Ochsner Clinical School Medical Student Research Mentor of the Year

Kathy Jo CarstarphenCongratulations to Dr Kathy Jo Carstarphen, who was recently named the 2020 Ochsner Clinical School Medical Student Research Mentor of the Year. Dr. Carstarphen was nominated for this award by four medical students, Donald Chang, Xing Hou, Monica Gillie, and Sarah-Pearl Siganporia, in recognition of her support and guidance of their research activities.

Dr Carstarphen ensures that every medical student rotating through her clinic is involved in a research project. She recognizes research as an integral component of clinical practice and impresses this importance upon her students. The students shared that, “She truly embodies the spirit of a research mentor - one that promotes curiosity, free thinking, problem solving, and ingenuity. She has recreated a family culture in clinic.”

Dr Carstarphen received her medical and public health degrees from University of Alabama at Birmingham, then completed her internship and residency at Tulane Hospital System in New Orleans. She has clinical experience with population health management for high-risk populations and seniors. Dr Carstarphen is board certified in internal medicine and has been on staff at Ochsner since 2016. She has a special clinical interest in healthcare disparities, vulnerable populations, barriers to care and improving the delivery of healthcare to all members of the New Orleans community.
