Australian Internships

UQ had 79 onshore international students who graduated in 2022. 90% of the UQ onshore international 2022 graduates obtained an internship in an Australian hospital in 2023, and 93% of these internships were in Queensland. Of the onshore international graduates who obtained internships in Queensland, 55% were in regional locations.

A number of international onshore graduates each year secure internships after the main allocations are completed by Queensland Health. Therefore some graduates for whom we have confirmed registration in Australia, and who are counted in our internship numbers, may have obtained internships in hospitals not listed here.

Employment destinations by permanent residency

The permanent residency (PR) country of our onshore international medical students varies from year to year, with the majority of 2022 graduates coming from Canada, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the United States. The majority of our graduates obtain internships in Australia. Canada and Singapore are the most common countries for graduates to return to and our graduates have also returned to the US and New Zealand.

US match

Canadian match

Only one 2022 Canadian PR graduate participated in the 2023 CaRMS Match, and this graduate was successful in obtaining a residency. In total, 17 UQ Canadian PR graduates (from across a range of graduation years) participated in the 2023 CaRMS Match, achieving a 53% match rate.

Overall, 100% of our 2022 Canadian PR graduates have obtained an internship or residency in Australia, Canada or the US.
