Doctor of Medicine

Entry pathways

There are several entry routes to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program for high school students and university graduates. 

Doctor of Medicine Provisional Entry (for school leavers)

Greater Brisbane Provisional Entry

If you're in your final year of high school (Queensland Year 12 or equivalent), you can apply for the Greater Brisbane Provisional Entry pathway, offered at UQ.

This pathway guarantees entry into the MD if you:

  • successfully complete your bachelor's degree at UQ within the minimum time, 
  • achieve an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0, and
  • complete two subject prerequisites. 

This pathway is available to both domestic and international applicants.

You will be based in the Greater Brisbane area for all four years of the MD.

Central Queensland – Wide Bay Regional Medical Pathway

If you're in your final year of high school you can also apply for the Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Pathway to Medicine), offered by CQUniversity (CQU) at their Rockhampton and Bundaberg campuses.

This pathway guarantees entry into the MD if you:

  • successfully complete the Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Pathway to Medicine) at CQU within the minimum time, and
  • achieve an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0.

By completing the CQU's Bachelor of Medical Sciences you will meet the subject prerequisites for the MD program.

This pathway is only available to domestic applicants.

You will be based at our Rural Clinical School in Central Queensland or Wide Bay for all four years of the MD program.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Provisional Entry

If you're in your final year of high school and identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person you can apply for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Admissions Pathway, offered at UQ.

This pathway guarantees entry into the MD if you:

  • successfully complete your bachelor's degree at UQ within the minimum time,
  • achieve an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0, and
  • complete two subject prerequisites.

This pathway is available to domestic applicants.

You will be based in the Greater Brisbane area for all four years of the MD.

There are dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Provisional Entry Admissions Pathways for Central Queensland – Wide Bay and Darling Downs – South West. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply through CQU or UniSQ for these pathways. For all four years of the MD program, you will be based at our corresponding Rural Clinical School locations.

Darling Downs – South West Medical Pathway

If you’re in your final year of high school you can apply for the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Medicine Pathway), offered by the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) at their Toowoomba campus.

This pathway guarantees entry into the MD if you:

  • successfully complete the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Medicine Pathway) at UniSQ within the minimum time, and
  • achieve an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0.

By completing the UniSQ Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Medicine Pathway) you will meet the subject prerequisites for the MD program.

This pathway is only available to domestic applicants.

You will be based at our Rural Clinical School in the Darling Downs – South West regions for all four years of the MD program.

Doctor of Medicine Graduate Entry (for university graduates)

Greater Brisbane Graduate Entry

If you've completed, or are in your final year of, a minimum of a 3-year bachelor's degree (6 semesters full-time), you can apply for the Greater Brisbane Graduate Entry pathway.

This pathway provides direct entry into the MD and is available to both domestic and international applicants. 

You will be based in the Greater Brisbane area for all four years of the MD.

Central Queensland – Wide Bay Regional Medical Pathway

If you've completed, or are in your final year of, a minimum of a 3-year bachelor's degree (6 semesters full-time), you can apply for the Central Queensland – Wide Bay Regional Medical Pathway.

This pathway provides direct entry into the MD and is available to domestic applicants only. As part of the application process, applicants will be considered for entry on a Tier system. Further information on the Tier system can be found here

You will spend your first year in Greater Brisbane before being based from Year 2 onwards at our Rural Clinical School sites in Central Queensland or Wide Bay. From 2025, all four years of the MD will be offered in the CQ and WB regions.

Darling Downs – South West Medical Pathway

If you've completed, or are in your final year of, a minimum of a 3-year bachelor's degree (6 semesters full-time), you will be able to apply for the Darling Downs – South West Medical Pathway.

This pathway will be available from Semester 1, 2024 and provides direct entry into the MD. It is available to domestic applicants only. As part of the application process, applicants will be considered for entry on a Tier system. Further information on the Tier system can be found here

You will spend your first year in Greater Brisbane before being based from Year 2 onwards at our Rural Clinical School sites in the Darling Downs and South West regions. From 2026, all four years of the MD will be offered in the DD-SW regions.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Graduate Entry

If you've completed, or are in your final year of, a minimum of a 3-year bachelor's degree (6 semesters full-time) and identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person you can apply for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Admissions Pathway.

This pathway provides direct entry into the MD and is available to domestic applicants only.

For the 2024 intakes, you will be based in Greater Brisbane for Year 1 and can elect whether you will be based in Greater Brisbane, Central Queensland or Wide Bay for Years 2 - 4.

From 2025, you can elect whether you will be based in Greater Brisbane, Central Queensland or Wide Bay for all four years of the MD.

UQ-Ochsner

If you're a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and have completed, or are in your final year of, a minimum of a 3-year bachelor's degree (6 semesters full-time), you can apply for the UQ-Ochsner MD program.

You will train across two continents, spending your first two years in Brisbane, Australia, before completing years three and four at our Ochsner Clinical School in Louisiana, United States.
