2023 Research Lab Rounds
In its sixth year, Research Lab Rounds is an opportunity for first- and second-year medical students to observe what goes on in research laboratories. Students rotate in pairs through 3 to 4 different laboratories observing experiments, attending lab meetings, journal clubs etc. The program is ideal to get a glance into research and make future research contacts.

Life as a Clinician-Scientist

MDANZ National “3M+1Q Competition”
The Research Educators Network (REN) of the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand (MDANZ) is hosting the inaugural “3M+1Q Competition” across all Medical Schools in ANZ on 26 November from 1-3pm AEDT.
The 3M+1Q format is a 3 minute talk followed by 1 question, which is a variation of the familiar 3 Minute Thesis (3MT). All medical schools were invited to nominate one student to represent their school.

MD Student Research Info Night (Report)
21July 2022,Translational Research Institute
A joint initiative of the University of Queensland Medical Society and the Ochsner Medical Student Association, the inaugural MD Research Info Night was held on the 21st of July at the Translational Research Institute. This student-organised event was aimed at Phase 1 students interested in pursuing research during their medical degree. Featured speakers included Associate Professor Victoria Atkinson and Professor Di Eley, as well as medical students Benjamin Cai and Hayley Reed. The event was well attended, with over 70 Year 1 & 2 students in the audience.

UQ Medical Student Lab Rounds: 2022
What is it?
This is an opportunity for students in 1st and 2nd year medicine to observe several research laboratories. It is voluntary (not graded) and involves students rotating through 3 different laboratories spending 3 hours (min) in each laboratory. The laboratories are located at either TRI or Herston during Semester 2, 2022. These Lab Rounds are not associated with the 2nd year research elective, an MPhil or a PhD.
Lab Rounds program is ideal for making future research contacts and deciding whether research is right for you. Most laboratories will be wet lab, but some dry lab or clinical research may be available. Students will be paired for rotating through the labs.
What will you do in the lab?
Activities include observing experiments within the lab, attending lab meetings, journal clubs, meeting or interviewing the laboratory head, etc. The timing and exact nature of these activities is negotiated between the lab and the student.
When will this occur?
The research immersion will start on 8th Aug 2022 and run over 9 weeks within Semester 2.
- Rotation 1: 8 Aug to 26 Aug 2022
- Rotation 2: 29 Aug to 16 Sep 2022
- Rotation 3: 19 Sep to 7 Oct 2022
Students who complete all 3 lab rotations will receive a certificate of completion from the Faculty of Medicine.

2021 Research Lab Rounds - A Flexible Introduction to Laboratory Research
What is it?
Research Lab Rounds is an opportunity for students in MD1 and MD2 to observe research in action at several research laboratories.
Research Lab Rounds is not a course, it is not graded and is not connected in any way to the semester 2 research elective, or extra-curricular MD research, or the MPhil or PhD programs. They are intended to give students a flexible taste of research on a purely voluntary participation basis. Students will rotate in pairs through 3 different laboratories with 3 activities in each laboratory, located at either TRI or Herston, during Semester 2, 2021.
Research Lab Rounds is ideal for making future research contacts and deciding whether research is right for you. Most laboratories will be wet lab, but some dry lab or clinical research may be available. Students will be paired for rotation through the labs.
When do they happen?
Research Lab Rounds will start on Monday 9 August 2021 and run over 9 weeks within Semester 2.
- Round 1: 9 - 27 August 2021
- Round 2: 30 August – 17 September 2021
- Round 3: 20 September – 8 October 2021
Students who complete all the rounds will receive a certificate of completion.
