About Miles

Miles is one of those towns which, for most of its life, was a sleepy service centre surrounded by the rich soils of the Darling Downs. Recently it has become central to the development of coal seam gas in the Surat Basin and, as such, it has boomed. Miles is the centre of a native wildflower region extending north to the Great Divide. The beautiful Balonne River highlights the beauty of Miles, particularly in September when the wildflowers bloom in abundance.

Close-by attractions include;

  • Dogwood Creek walking track
  • Wild flower self drive tour
  • Miles Back to the Bush Festival - September
  • Miles Wildflower Festival - September
  • Miles Historical Museum

Tips from previous students

  • Make it clear what you want to get out of the placement early to all staff and keep reminding them of specific things you want to do or watch, otherwise it's easy to miss opportunities.
  • The hospital has a system where you leave your number on a whiteboard to be contacted when any interesting patients present to the hospital. Express your interest to ensure you're contacted.
  • The practice staff are very welcoming - they often host after-hours dinners and parties for students to join in.
  • Miles is also close-by to some great travel spots, including Bunya Mountains and Toowoomba.
  • Get involved, ask questions, remain curious. If you arrive with the intention of learning, you undoubtedly will.
  • Would definitely recommend exploring nearby towns like Chinchilla, Roma and Dalby.

Testimonials

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Miles, especially being able to negotiate time between both Miles Medical Centre (general practice) and Miles Hospital. The hospital was a definite highlight given the diversity of patient presentations and ability to get involved in lots of procedural work. The team of nurses, locums and support staff were so welcoming and really made the experience overwhelmingly positive.

The preceptor was amazing. Highly recommend. He gave detailed feedback and was always patient and helpful. He is extremely passionate about teaching and was fantastic for my RRM experience.

I had an incredible time at Miles and absolutely loved this placement - it has been one of my best placements so far! The accommodation and facilities are fantastic. The doctor was a great preceptor and teacher. All the other staff were also super welcoming and friendly and I really feel that I have been able to get involved in the community here. I would definitely recommend Miles to other students!

All the staff that I had the pleasure of interacting with were fantastically welcoming and helpful. In particular, the preceptor was a fantastic supervisor - he was incredibly helpful, non-judgemental about my level of knowledge/experience, friendly and approachable, and took every opportunity that arose to get me involved.
