Tips from Previous Students

  • Ask the doctors whatever questions you have, especially if it involves your career and progression after med school, they give great advice.
  • Show up early and get the nursing handover at the start of the week before the doctor handover (this will set you up for a good week, gain a deeper understanding of any new issues over the weekend to be able to inform doctors at handover as well if needed).
  • Be proactive and do the morning bloods/swabs etc ideally before doctor handover so once you get on the ward you can start seeing patients with them rather than run around doing bloods.
  • There is a well set up gym which was super helpful. The Brisbane valley rail trail is also great for trail running/mountain biking.
  • I also joined the local gym near the pool and this place was awesome and had great equipment and footy fields/basketball and netball courts. The owner was really lovely there too and encouraged me to play netball on Mondays.

Testimonials

The entire placement was excellent. Three out of four of the doctors that I spent the most time with were incredibly engaging, brilliant teachers, patient and super encouraging when it came to clinical opportunities. They pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and I gained a LOT of knowledge and experience as a result. The hospital is a great size and the inclusion of an emergency department as well as weekly infusions means there are even more opportunities for DOPS, COPS and mini CEX.

The preceptor is an excellent doctor and was a great preceptor. She allowed me to have autonomy whilst also feeling supported, and helped me whenever I asked. She sets a great example for students as she is very knowledgeable, thorough and has a lovely bedside manner.

The experience at Kilcoy Hospital was excellent. The medical staff were very happy to allow you to be independent and trusted you with responsibilities that made you feel involved and valued. There were constant opportunities for learning procedural tasks with both the medical and nursing teams.
