The Mayne Academy of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is headed by Professor Sailesh Kumar and is responsible for teaching and research in women’s health as part of the MD Program.
Medical students are exposed to a wide variety of clinical and social issues relevant to women’s health in metropolitan, rural and remote settings.
Our academic staff are involved in medical education, patient care, research and professional/community services.

The Mayne Academy of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has a presence across many hospitals, including Royal Brisbane and Women's, Mater Mother’s Hospital, Ipswich, Queen Elizabeth II, Caboolture, Redcliffe, Redland Hospitals and at Ochsner Health in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Medical students are exposed to a wide variety of clinical and social issues relevant to women’s health in metropolitan, rural and remote settings. The broad learning objectives for this discipline include those in reproductive and sexual health, fertility, normal/abnormal pregnancy, maternal and fetal assessment, gynaecology oncology, general gynaecology, mental health and menopause. Our academic staff are involved in medical education, patient care, research, and professional/community services.
There are highly productive research groups in perinatal and obstetric medicine, gynaecological oncology and endometriosis mainly based at the Mater Mother’s and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospitals with strong links with scientists from the Mater Research Institute (MRI-UQ), Translational Research Institute (TRI) and Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR) as well as other national and international collaborators. These groups have attracted significant NHMRC, MRFF, philanthropic and other funding and supervise large numbers of research higher degree (MPhil/PhD) students. There are also numerous opportunities for medical students to participate in clinical and laboratory research projects.
