About
The Mayne Academy of Surgery encompasses teaching and research activities with the aim of keeping students and researchers at the forefront of surgical practice. The Head of the Mayne Academy is Professor Owen Ung.
Teaching encompasses the range of surgical pathology, while clinical placements give students the opportunity to apply their studies as well as acquire further knowledge and skills in the area of surgical diseases.
Patients are the basis of the teaching within the hospital environment. Teaching and learning occurs at the bed-side, on ward rounds, in the operating theatre and in the out-patients setting. The students are expected to be actively involved in the patient’s assessment management as a member of the team in the ward allocations.

The Mayne Academy of Surgery teaches in hospitals affiliated with UQ Medical School. This includes:
- the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital;
- the Princess Alexandra Hospital;
- Greenslopes Private Hospital;
- The Mater Hospital; QEII;
- The Prince Charles Hospital;
- Redcliffe and Caboolture Hospitals;
- Ipswich Hospital;
- Rural Clinical Units at Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay Hospitals;
- and at our overseas Ochsner Clinical School, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
The Mayne Academy of Surgery teaches students about surgical diseases, how they present clinically, how they are investigated, and the principles of management. Teaching covers the spectrum of surgical pathology including gastrointestinal surgery, breast and endocrine surgery, burns and trauma, plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, vascular surgery, orthopaedics, ear nose and throat, head and neck surgery, and ophthalmology.
Placements
Clinical placements provide students with the opportunity to apply their studies as well as acquire further knowledge, skills and experience required to become a safe and competent medical practitioner. Over the course of the medical program, students undertake a range of placements in a variety of healthcare settings.
Our academic staff are involved in the supervision of Research Higher Degree (PhD and MPhil) students. Study topics range from pure laboratory science to fully clinical studies.
