The Mayne Academy of Paediatrics led by Professor Craig Munns encompasses teaching and research into all aspects of child health from neonatology, medicine, surgery, adolescent medicine, community child health, child and adolescent psychiatry, and medical imaging.
The core clinical placement will help prepare medical students for work in paediatric clinical unit, understand the scope of paediatrics, and recognise and differentiate the clinical signs of a serious ill child.
There are a wide variety of research opportunities within clinical departments at the Queensland Children's Hospital, the Child Health Research Centre and other research centres across The University of Queensland.

The office of the Mayne Academy of Paediatrics is situated on Level 7 of the Queensland Children's Hospital with our students based at our clinical units throughout Queensland and New Orleans (USA).

Paediatrics and Child Health is a core clinical placement in the final year of the medical program.
Course goals are to help students to:
- prepare for work in a paediatric clinical unit;
- recognise the sick child;
- understand the scope of paediatrics and
- gain sufficient knowledge and experience to progress to postgraduate training in Paediatrics and Child Health.
The six-week clinical placement is underpinned by the paediatric online interactive education (POLIE) curriculum, supplemented by a specialist lecture series and other teaching sessions depending on the specific Clinical attachment. Assessment includes work based assessments (mini-CEX), CAT/Peer Review task, as well as an end of block oral exam (SCE/viva) and an end of semester MCQ.
After successfully completing this course students should be able to:
- Relate the pathogenesis of common/important paediatric illnesses to its expected presentation, natural history and implications for management.
- Recognise and differentiate the clinical signs of a seriously ill child.
- Develop and apply a clinical approach to common/important acute and chronic paediatric presentations.
- Develop and apply clinical reasoning skills in the assessment and management of the child.
- Develop and apply skills in communicating with children and their parents or caregivers.
- Apply strategies for health prevention and maintenance within the family, social, cultural and community context for the child.
- Recognise and apply strategies for safe patient care including risk prevention, public health awareness and infection control.
- Access, evaluate and apply clinical research findings in the management of sick children.
- Develop skills in evaluating your own performance and directing your own learning.
- Develop the principles of ethical medical practice through interaction with children and their families, and with colleagues.
- Develop an awareness of the importance of multidisciplinary teams in the management of children.
- Demonstrate professional behaviour in the clinical, tutorial and online learning environments.
